Organised together with Tori and Tobi from CityLAB Berlin, we hosted it again at DigitalService.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We discussed \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/offentliches-gestalten-shaping-public-sectors-future\/events\/295823934\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/offentliches-gestalten-shaping-public-sectors-future\/events\/295823934\/\">Designing a more digital Berlin<\/a>\u2019. And in a not-too-serious gesture, I put a pixelated currywurst on the poster \u2013 that emerged after an exchange and co-design session with graphic designer Robin. Otherwise, there weren\u2019t too many ideas of what a digital Berlin would look like. Luckily, our 4 speakers filled it with concrete things and practical evidence of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cDesigning a more digital Berlin\u201d<br><br>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/toriboeck?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@toriboeck<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ckaatz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ckaatz<\/a> are kicking off our 3rd public sector innovation meetup at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DigitalServBund?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DigitalServBund<\/a>.<br><br>Through 3 talks, we explore what\u2019s happening, what\u2019s challenging, and what\u2019s next. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ud4xmp1p1W\">pic.twitter.com\/Ud4xmp1p1W<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan ? ? @martinjordan@mastodon.social (@Martin_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Martin_Jordan\/status\/1701640023341228456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With a broad angle to the topic, we had 3 talks focussing on various parts of digitalising Berlin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dr Niklas Kossow from CityLAB Berlin on \u2018Transforming government with a book: reflections on \u2018\u00d6ffentliches Gestalten\u2019\u2019\u00a0\u2013 with a focus on transformation and scaled capability building<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Max Eckert from the Open Data Informationsstelle (ODIS) on \u2018Open data and visualising Berlin\u2019s budget data\u2019 \u2013 with a focus on tech, data and policy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr Bj\u00f6rn Ludger M\u00e4rtin and Mai Ky on \u2018Redesigning the visual interface layer of Berlin.de\u2019 \u2013 with a focus on transformation management and design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even 2 hours in, participants didn\u2019t get tired of asking more questions, drilling deeper and expressing empathy and appreciation for the challenging transformation that\u2019s underway. Also, they again gave the evening a 4.8 out of 5 score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Formats like these are vital for starting a dialogue with the public about government transformation, pulling the curtain to make the good work happening visible and attracting people to our essential and meaningful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Discussing a more digital Berlin:<br><br>What\u2019s working well, what needs to improve most urgently and what biggest challenges were overcome already \u2014 Mai Ky and Bj\u00f6rn M\u00e4rtin from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BerlinOnlineNet?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BerlinOnlineNet<\/a> and Niklas Kossow from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/citylabberlin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@citylabberlin<\/a> at the Berlin public sector innovation meetup. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZaNeRatYex\">pic.twitter.com\/ZaNeRatYex<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan ? ? @martinjordan@mastodon.social (@Martin_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Martin_Jordan\/status\/1701673068072931355?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People used the time for discussion with the speakers and a smaller personal exchange during the breaks and at the end. We had close to 60 people attending on a hot 30+ degrees evening. The most delightful feedback we got: \u201cThe best meetup I\u2019ve attended in Berlin so far \u2013 no faff or boasting, but substance and nuance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meetup series stands consistently at a 4.8 rating based on 24 ratings across the 3 events we ran so far. This time, 91% said they would attend again. We successfully recorded 2 of the 3 talks and will make them available in the coming week or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meetup will return for a 4th edition in November. And we have plenty of ideas for future topics. We want to return to the subject of the digitalisation of Berlin in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">Shifting the focus from inwards to outward-facing and back again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the meetup, I mostly spent my time on internal-facing work for the past few weeks. This outward-facing community work can only happen through a joint effort with a working group. Without that pull from co-organisers, it will be pushed aside easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With our internal salary cycle and related performance reviews approaching, I had feedback conversations and prepared and gathered data. Colleagues from the people team have made the framework clearer and the process more open to everyone in the organisation. It involved many conversations and Q&amp;A sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I supported our team working on small claims for various hours this week. With my colleague Jutta, our head of transformation management, I helped facilitate a session on ways of working and communicating. For the team, some strategic decisions need to be made, and senior engagement sessions are coming up. I appreciate the involvement in this work as the importance of it in the broader digitalisation of justice services is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, we published the Service Standard\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalservice.bund.de\/transparenz\/zwischenreport-servicestandard-bericht-online-dienst-beratungshilfe-beantragen\" target=\"_blank\">peer review report for the \u2018Check if you can get legal aid\u2019 service<\/a>\u00a0on Monday. It is our first peer-review report after 3 teams ran self-audits against the standard until now. In the coming weeks and months, I want us to move towards cross-sector reviews, so I started talking to more people about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-3-font-size\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next week, I\u2019ll be travelling from Berlin to Edinburgh by train to attend the 10th \u2018Service Design in Government\u2019 conference. Over the coming days, Kara and I still have some writing, editing and designing to do to finish <a href=\"https:\/\/govservicedesign.net\/programme\/long-slog-public-service-design\">our 60-minute talk, \u2018The long slog of public service design\u2019<\/a>. Luckily, it\u2019s on the 3rd day of the conference, which gives us some extra face-to-face rehearsal time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With little preparation time, we are running the first proper <a href=\"https:\/\/next-netz.de\/communities\/nutzerzentriertes-design\/\">NExT community gathering for user-centred design people<\/a> in the German public sector next Thursday. The topic will be design systems and component libraries. I\u2019ve been reaching out to several excellent speakers \u2013 including the folks from Berlin who spoke at this week\u2019s meetup.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DigitalService opened its doors again in Martin\u2019s week 72 there.
