I arrived! And finished my first week at the Digital Service already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While figuring out what format works for me and these weeknotes, I\u2019ll mostly let this week\u2019s tweets recap what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Onboarding at the Digital Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1st day done ?<br><br>You know you\u2019re in a \u2026<br><br>\u2026 sensible org when people use contemporary tools\u2014Slack, Asana, Figma<br><br>\u2026 progressive org when they have channels to discuss carbon reduction, diversity, mental well-being<br><br>\u2026 purposeful org when people tell you they came for the mission<\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan (he\/him) ? ? (@Martin_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Martin_Jordan\/status\/1521202090583990274?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the onboarding, everyone gets an onboarding buddy. Mine is Lisa, our head of finance. She is a funny, chatty, and cheerful personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I and 2 others got pinged by a Slack bot, asking us to find time to meet over coffee. So we did that \u2013 as the weather allowed on the roof terrace \u2013 and mostly talked about train rides, train journeys and rail infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On day 2, in between my onboarding, I had the chance to spend a few hours at the Digitaler Staat (Digital State) conference. There wasn\u2019t too much I hadn\u2019t heard before, and it felt like consultancies and agencies used the event to make their pitches. However, there was rather little happening on a working level, even though 575 services should be digitalised by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exception was a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/martin_jordan\/status\/1521470331457875969?s=21&amp;t=EVA9QZ2XRbXPJv79PMB0jw\">panel on user-centred and agile ways of working, led by the great Tati Mu\u00f1oz<\/a>. A joint discipline onboarding talk was what I had not seen like this in a little while: a proper connection and mutual understanding between design, engineering, and product. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u2705 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DigitalServ4Ger?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DigitalServ4Ger<\/a> onboarding<br><br>That was a proper and comprehensive onboarding process incl. significant face-time with the leadership team.<br><br>What stands out is the linkup between design, engineering, and product \u2014 and well-established exchange formats in and across disciplines. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/btrOlfjK6j\">pic.twitter.com\/btrOlfjK6j<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan (he\/him) ? ? (@Martin_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Martin_Jordan\/status\/1522627959978438656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Connecting to the outside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To get an outside view right from the start, I spoke to Dr Ines Mergel, a full professor for public administration and digital governance at the University in Konstanz, and Svenja Bickert-Appleby, who is working with local government in the federal state of Hesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These perspectives are vital as the Digital Service is solely working with Federal ministries, departments, and agencies but has a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalservice.bund.de\/blog\/strategische-ausrichtung-2022\" target=\"_blank\">dedicated mission to increase capability across government<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thinking about the different presentations of digital government services worldwide, I asked on Twitter why service start and landing pages should have non-functional images. I hope to meet with all designers for at least 45 minutes next week.
