Unlike the English, Germans don\u2019t move their public holidays closer to the weekend. So a Thursday off creates a \u2018bridge day\u2019 you can either fill with a day of annual leave or work calmly in the office. I did the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Sharing learnings from the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I slowly forget everything seen and done in the UK, I offered a 75-min lunch and learn session about the Government Digital Service (GDS) and the UK government\u2019s broader approach to digital transformation. The session was well-attended, and after 40 mins of me talking through a pile of illustrating slides, my colleagues and I discussed many related aspects, including crucial success factors for change at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also managed to frame some classic posters to brighten up the kitchen space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GDSTeam?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GDSTeam<\/a>\u2019s history, mission, work, and the UK govt\u2019s approach to digital transformation in a lunch &amp; learn session at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DigitalServ4Ger?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DigitalServ4Ger<\/a> today.<br><br>For the occasion, I framed the iconic posters made by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LouDowne?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LouDowne<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/loft27design?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@loft27design<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markhurrell?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@markhurrell<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sonia_turcotte?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sonia_turcotte<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GovDesign?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GovDesign<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HT58gqG5lK\">pic.twitter.com\/HT58gqG5lK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan (he\/him) ? ? (@Martin_Jordan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Martin_Jordan\/status\/1529044682038202368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 24, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Preparing design blog posts with the team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After some weeks of pure inputs, I\u2019m getting closer to co-creating outputs via blog posts again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I don\u2019t want to or should be the one writing them, I ran a workshop as part of your Design Weekly session. Together in the design team, we identified potential topics and barriers for creating blog posts and how to overcome them. Quite a few topics came together, and we\u2019ll get into writing shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An all-new blog is also what we consider for the <a href=\"http:\/\/international.gov-design.com\">International Design in Government community<\/a>. Through a community survey, we learned there is a clear interest in reading and writing blog posts from colleagues worldwide. So Paloma and I will start collecting topics and building a content pipeline. I\u2019d expect the blog to materialise in early autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Exchanging with colleagues around the corner and abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After an insightful call with the French colleagues earlier this year, I caught up with a colleague in Paris who works for beta.gouv.fr and the \u2018Direction interminist\u00e9rielle du num\u00e9rique\u2019. Their view and interest are in agile ways of working, including service design. In September, they are planning to bring international folks together in Paris. Time-wise that might fit perfectly with attending the \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/Service Design in Government\">Service Design in Government<\/a>\u2019 conference in Edinburgh, which just accepted our #StrongDesign workshop proposal. A little European trip in late September sounds like a charming thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After about 20 years, I located a former fellow student in another government-owned subsidy, working at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bundesdruckerei\">\u2018Federal Printer\u2019 (\u2018Bundesdruckerei\u2019)<\/a>. As old-fashioned as it may sound, they don\u2019t only print Germany\u2019s and other countries\u2019 banknotes and identity documents but also do a lot of development in the secure digital identification space. We talked about our work now and realised how our teams\u2019 work overlaps, including making digital public services accessible and usable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, Paloma and I ran the monthly international community call \u2013 on \u2018designing good forms\u2019. We heard from the San Francisco Digital Services team and about the upcoming GOV.UK Forms product that GDS is working on. After over 5 years, it was the first time I didn\u2019t represent the UK government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is new: For the 1st time in over 5 years, I won\u2019t be representing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cabinetofficeuk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CabinetOfficeUK<\/a> in an int\u2019l call. <br><br>I\u2019m grateful to be able to continue this vital borderless community work out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DigitalServ4Ger?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DigitalServ4Ger<\/a>\u2014together with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GDSTeam?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GDSTeam<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JainPaloma?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JainPaloma<\/a>\u2014and represent Germany from now on. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kwDseaV9HI\">pic.twitter.com\/kwDseaV9HI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan (he\/him) ? ? The book delves into managing ageing computer systems and future-proofing modern ones. While it requires a bit of tech literacy, we had a vivid discussion about the broader maintenance of physical and digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, I was delighted to see it adopt a Service-Dominant Logic view and acknowledge value (co-)creation by users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nerdy perhaps, but I\u2019m always glad to find explicit references to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveVargo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SteveVargo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobertLusch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RobertLusch<\/a>\u2019s Service-Dominant Logic in non-management literature, like here in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bellmar?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bellmar<\/a>\u2019s \u2018Kill it with fire\u2019 on legacy modernisation.<br><br>Shows understanding of users as value creators.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BookClub?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BookClub<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4QQuFZrLuE\">pic.twitter.com\/4QQuFZrLuE<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Jordan (he\/him) ? ? While the first part focussed on recognising it, this part covered interventions and let us work through some scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After 4 weeks, I\u2019m getting close to wrapping up my first month at the Digital Service. Multiple tasks for the next few weeks are reasonably clear now.
