But let\u2019s see! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Meeting the designers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week was about meeting almost all of the designers at the Digital Service in 1:1 sessions. Everyone seems driven by the mission, is deep into their work, and has different experiences and backgrounds \u2013 from working at government-owned German rail to a major civic tech project to a boutique design consultancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite a few of us have studied at FH Potsdam, Potsdam\u2019s University of Applied Sciences. It was the first in Germany to launch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fh-potsdam.de\/studium-lehre\/studiengaenge\/interfacedesign-b\">degree programme for interface design<\/a> (back in 2003), where I took some courses. It still attracts and educates excellent designers today. You don\u2019t want too much of the same school of thought, though, cause that can lead to groupthink.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Understanding what design needs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I also got involved in recruitment and shadowed an interview with an applicant, letting the senior designers do what they have done exceptionally well so far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also started talking about design roles, specialisation and differentiation. To be fair: It took GDS about 4 years to split out design into graphic, interaction and service design. The German government\u2019s Digital Service is just about 1.5 years old. So maybe the generalist approach to design, combining user interfaces and user experience, fits for now and is suitable for the organisation and its work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what artefacts and building blocks does design need at the Digital Service? GDS\u2019s design principles \u2013 that are now the UK government\u2019s design principles \u2013 turn 10 this years. And they seem still as relevant and useful as they were in 2012. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do we need some, too? Something to explore \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/martin_jordan\/status\/1525020930610810880?s=21&#038;t=EVA9QZ2XRbXPJv79PMB0jw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Meeting more people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I met a few more people this week. I had a much too short lunch with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.next-netz.de\/uber-uns\/unsere-geschaftsstelle\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Next Netzwerk\u2019s Vincent<\/a>, a walk talk with Joshua, and another buddy session with my colleague Lisa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also spoke with Robin Pfaff, who started developing a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.design-system.sh\/\" target=\"_blank\">design system for the northern federal state of Schleswig-Holstein<\/a>, and a little working group he\u2019s putting together. Their goal is to create a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/n3gz.org\/events\/n3gz-input-design-system-for-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\">design system for Germany<\/a>. For it, two states and their local IT supplier are collaborating already and want to bring more people into the fold. I\u2019ll be joining their regular call from now on to see how I might be able to connect some dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not manage to speak to everyone in the design team just yet.
