That was fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Making sense of things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I am still very much in learning mode but believe I have reached the point where I am forming opinions and viewpoints based on data and things I\u2019ve observed here \u2013 instead of things done before elsewhere. So it\u2019s no longer just a transfer of knowledge and former experience but with built-up context, a better-informed assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/martin_jordan\/status\/1532052686882865152?s=21&#038;t=kGtTq-20ft5IZHQFZ8naOw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After sharing this tweet, a few international colleagues responded and expressed how equally tricky it is in their government to have a shared common communication platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St\u00e9phanie then articulated the value of a unified communications platform across government:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/martin_jordan\/status\/1532729497899917312?s=21&#038;t=kGtTq-20ft5IZHQFZ8naOw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Making things inclusive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When discussing legacy tech infrastructure that government services are built upon and what those services still need to do to be inclusive, I researched some long strings of actual data that often cannot be processed. Cities and towns might give a new street a long name that cannot even be saved and handled in their own computer systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/martin_jordan\/status\/1531383804170063878?s=21&#038;t=kGtTq-20ft5IZHQFZ8naOw\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also stumbled upon a <a href=\"https:\/\/stephaniewalter.design\/blog\/hello-my-name-is-stephanie-talk-encoding-special-characters-issues-poor-user-experience\/\">documented talk from another St\u00e9phanie on \u2018special characters\u2019, inclusive design and user experience<\/a>. She demonstrates how systems and services often reject her first name with an acute accent. In her conclusion, she then demands: \u201cstop putting the needs of our systems, database, before the needs of our users\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned a few weeks ago (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/pamela-krosta-hartl-5688405_accessibilitytesting-usertesting-barrierefreiheit-activity-6935167129109323776-jQoK\">my colleague Pamela on LinkedIn<\/a>), we are looking into accessibility improvements for the DigitalService\u2019s website. I assisted Nadine a bit in prioritising the issues and sorting what can be done by content folks and what needs additional development work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-h-3-font-size wp-block-heading\">Meeting users, ideas, and a new designer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about users, I finally spent time in user research sessions, focussing on parts of a flow <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalservice.bund.de\/blog\/https-digitalservice-bund-de-blog-neues-projekt-grundsteuer-privateigentum\">in the new property tax service to be launched in early July 2022<\/a>. I\u2019ll do my best to do my 2 hours of user research every 6 weeks at least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Design Weekly session last week, we did an ideation session for potential blog post topics in the design team. This week, we continued prioritising them. Now, I\u2019ve 2 blog posts in the making. 1 of them already has a finished draft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the same day, a new starter joined us: Sabrina, who previously worked at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si-labs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Service Innovation Labs<\/a>\u00a0and developed\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/serviceblueprint.io\" target=\"_blank\">serviceblueprint.io<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working remotely for the second half of the week, I got some FOMO as I missed both the first in-person <a href=\"https:\/\/creativebureaucracy.org\/\">Creative Bureaucracy Festival<\/a> and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxcampeurope.org\/\">UX Camp Europe<\/a>. But plenty of things are happening later in June, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/veranstaltungen.handelsblatt.com\/govtech\/\">GovTech Gipfel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/citylab-berlin.org\/de\/events\/citylab-sommerfest\/\">CityLAB Berlin summer festival<\/a>. At both events, I agreed to speak now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on my first month, I noted 3 things I think I am doing or going to do through various pieces of work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Making work visible<\/li><li>Connecting the dots<\/li><li>Growing design &amp; designers<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Some connected dots you can see at the very top of this blog post where I started mapping government organisations and some individuals looking into web component libraries and similar things.
